![]() ![]() Some games I've played that attempted it include Wargame: Red Dragon, Red Alert 3, and the aforementioned SupCom 1 and 2. It's just such a spectacle to watch battleships slugging it out, hearing the blaze of CIWS while torpedo bombers scream overhead. Naval combat has always been the most compelling part of warfare for me, ever since I played the demo for Supreme Commander 2, which focuses on a naval brawl in an arctic shoal (Mission 1-3 in the main game). It's hard to get it to play nice with land and air combat (and making air combat work is hard enough if you don't go the 'everything is a VTOL' route like Starcraft), it require a portion of the play-space to be dedicated to boring water (which can make land units obsolete if transports are required), and it's very 'swingy' once one player takes control of the water, its very hard to take it back since they can just bombard your ports with impunity and prevent you building new units.ĭespite that, I have a strange love for it. Naval combat is something of the unloved middle child in RTS games.
